Michael N. Sawka, Ph.D., FAPS, FACSM is Adjunct Professor of Biological Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology He is a retired Department of Army Science and Technology Senior Scientist appointee and held numerous research, academic and executive positions. Dr. Sawka is an expert in integrative physiology of adaptation / maladaptation to environmental extremes (heat, cold, high-altitude), exercise physiology, thermoregulation, fluid / electrolyte balance, and exertional heat illness. Dr. Sawka published >320 full-length peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters; edited graduate textbooks on environmental physiology and exercise physiology. He presented >100 invited Symposia and Keynote Lectures at national / international scientific meetings. Dr. Sawka is Fellow Emeritus of The American Physiological Society and Fellow Emeritus of The American College of Sports Medicine. His honors include the Military Medical Merit Medallion (2005), American College of Sports Medicine’s Citation Award (2010), and American Physiological Society’s Honor Award for Environmental & Exercise (2016).
Current research is member of interdisciplinary team integrating physiology, wearable biosensors, and machine learning / artificial intelligence for decision aids to solve health
and performance issues. Recent publications include models for early prediction of impending exertional heat illness, quantifying physiological adaptations to heat stress, and quantifying body fluid needs for hydration management during physical exercise-heat stress.
