Biology Undergraduate Awards
Every spring semester, the faculty gives several undergraduate awards in Biological Sciences. These awards are presented to students demonstrating excellent academic achievement, initiative, and/or service. Some of the awards were designated by donors for students entering specific areas of study. Electronic nominations for awards will be solicited by Biological Sciences faculty and students will also be invited to self-nominate in the spring semester.
Biology Faculty Award: An award given by the Biological Sciences faculty to a graduating Biology major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, meritorious character, and significant contributions to the School of Biological Sciences This monetary award is funded by faculty donations, and the student’s name will be engraved on a plaque permanently displayed in the School of Biological Sciences' office.
Cherry L. Emerson Research Award: Up to two awards given annually to a junior or senior Biology major in recognition of a significant achievement in undergraduate research in any subfield of Biology. Nominees or their faculty mentors should submit a research manuscript that has been accepted or submitted to a journal, and a statement of the student’s contribution to the research. This award honors two members of the Emerson legacy at Georgia Tech: Cherry L. Emerson Sr. and Jr., and includes a monetary award, a personal plaque, and the student’s name engraved on a plaque permanently displayed in the School of Biological Sciences' office.
John H. Ridley Award: An award given annually to a junior Biology major who plans to apply to medical school and has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and talent for research. The award consists of a monetary award intended to support the recipient’s academic and research interests in the senior year.
Williams-Walls Award: An award given annually to one or more senior women in the life sciences (Biology or Psychology) with a grade point average of 3.5 or above, and who has applied to graduate school. Includes a monetary award, and the student’s name will be engraved on a plaque permanently displayed in the School of Biological Sciences' office.
